Not only is cat litter a poor solution for those who do not want the smell but cat litter can get expensive when added up over the life time of the cat. This can be especially true for those with older cats who may already have a routine.
It can be easier to get a young cat using toilet as they will take to it more easily. The first thing you want to do is get your cat familiar with the bathroom. Do not leave this door closed and if there is room, put the litter box as close to the toilet as possible. The cat will get used to the area and will not be afraid of the room. If you have a spare bathroom, you can even put the litter box on the toilet seat so that your cat will be used to jumping up to use it.
Once the cat is using toilet to use the litter box, you can remove it and replace it with a bin that will fit in the toilet with a small amount of litter in the bottom. Leave this for a few weeks so your cat can be comfortable. Then you can remove it and your cat will be using the toilet. Of course you can not teach them to flush, but the cost and smell of the litter will be gone.
